The respectful Michigan Court’s Prosecuting Attorney

As the preliminary investigations indicate, Sanaz Nezami was brutally murdered by her husband, Nima Nasiri on December 8, 2013. According to the US media, Sanaz Nezami, 27 years old, was an intelligent and active young woman, who was fluent in three languages: Farsi, English, and French. She had completed her studies and received a B.S. Degree in Engineering, and a Master’s Degree in French Translation. She applied for and was admitted to the PhD program in Environmental Studies at the Industrial University of Michigan.

Honorable Prosecuting Attorney, Upon hearing this news, the public opinion in Iran and Iranian communities around the world were deeply affected. By the time the report was published, people asked ‘what is the penalty of murderers, like Nima Nasiri? Will the court issue an adequate verdict?’ People, as well as women’s rights activists are both outraged and closely following the current court proceedings, and expect this respectful court to implement justice. According to Sara Nezami, her 31-year-old sister, Sanaz had not traveled to the US through ‘dependent visa’ and/or by marriage. She was an outstanding Iranian student and was admitted by two universities, a university in Ottawa, Canada, in PhD French Translation; and the Michigan University in Environmental Studies.

Honorable Prosecuting Attorney, Every day, thousands of women around the world become victims of violence, especially domestic violence. The criminals fleeing from justice and ignoring the victims’ rights lead to the continuation of violence against women. Trauma inflicted on her head and body was severe to the extent that Sanaz was brain-dead, and her organs saved the lives of 7 individuals. Now Sanaz is resting in peace, but your pursuit of justice can prevent the occurrence of another murder by persons like Nima Nasiri. Sanaz has nobody in the United States to defend her rights. However, we, a group of Iranian women’s rights activists request your Honorable prosecutor to hold a public hearing, inviting the media to draw public attention to the severity of domestic violence in today’s society. As Sanaz’s organs saved the lives of 7 individuals, her death will pave the road to stop violence against women. We, women’s rights activists and the signatories of this letter demand the maximum penalty in accordance with the laws of the State of Michigan for the murderer of Sanaz Nezami.

Sincerely Yours,
